Very promising, a bit technical, but quite good for all the complexity for them to simplify it as they have.

This is one of the most innovative PKM (and more) tools available. The AnyType team has created an intriguing and appealing foundation (protocol, next gen sync technique, etc.) that works really well across devices and platforms. It provides really functional building blocks to make it a great knowledge management companion but also to share and collaborate with others. It provides excellent link-centric (backlinks, outgoing links, etc.) visibility between the knowledge graph objects and has uniquely useful ways of enabling you to move between those (e.g. its Flow display). They've improved their user interface to make it simpler and more intuitive in the recent versions so it no longer has the somewhat difficult learning curve that it had in its early days.

Pros
+ privacy-focused (27)+ offline mode (21)+ open source (15)+ customizable data model (12)+ knowledge graph (13)+ E2E encryption (15)+ cross-platform (16)+ local-first (17)+ P2P sync (10)+ community support (6)+ self-hosting (3)+ Web3 integration (2)+ collaboration (1)+ responsive developer (1)
Cons
UI/UX quality (2) no multi-tab support (2) data export issues (1) limited search functionality (1)

It's a good project at its core. Collections are genius!

  • but there is room for growth in terms of small features: support for opening multiple tabs, Markdown, canvas like Obsidian CANVAS
Cons
missing Markdown support (3) no multi-tab support (2)

There's no doubt that as of February 2025, Anytype still has a fair way to go to really compete with the big names, BUT in my opinion the Anytype foundation is far stronger than any of the other products. Yes, it is a learning curve and yes, there are features that need to be added for parity with the competition however when you remember the local-first/E2E aspect plus the API coming... As a user I am playing the long game with Anytype, and so far they have not let me down.

Pros
+ E2E encryption (15)+ local-first (17)
Cons
learning curve (14)

Impressive step forward in personal knowledge management. The standout features that genuinely add value:

True data ownership: Local-first architecture with E2E encryption proves you can have modern features without compromising privacy Cross-platform availability: Seamless sync across Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android while maintaining offline functionality UX excellence: Clean interface that manages to handle complex features (knowledge graphs, dashboards) without overwhelming users

Having tested it against Notion, Anytype's performance is notably snappier due to its local-first approach. The P2P sync works reliably even on slower connections. Key improvement areas:

Learning curve for non-technical users (esp. recovery phrases) Limited templates compared to established players

For users prioritizing data sovereignty without sacrificing modern features, Anytype delivers. Currently using it for research documentation and personal knowledge management. Upvoted for pushing innovation in the right direction. 🚀

Pros
+ E2E encryption (15)+ local-first (17)+ offline mode (21)+ P2P sync (10)+ cross-platform (16)+ fast performance (14)+ privacy-focused (27)+ knowledge graph (13)+ open source (15)+ UI/UX quality (22)
Cons
learning curve (14) limited templates (2)

Well I am only a couple of days in but Anytype is, for me, the perfect combination of Notion and Obsidian. So far I am in love with it. There are a few little niggles but you can expect the same with any App. I look forward to seeing if any of the niggles get resolved in future updates.

Notion and Obsidian had a child, but the child is still young and not very well behaved. It shows incredible promise, but it's not ready to face the world on its own quite yet.

I'm looking for a Notion substitute that is faster and has offline/ local database. I'm still testing it, but it's looking pretty reliable so far. It's 5x faster than Notion (server based).

Pros
+ offline mode (21)+ local-first (17)+ fast performance (14)

isn't expressive enough, it works flawlessly, i've been fiddling around trying to break the app in a brutal manner, using my own work data to add some suspense XD and it is nothing but a miracle of an app,, I am using it as for CRM, Knowledge management, Learning management, book reading, book annotation (via a note that backlinks to the file i am reading) and more, it looks great, it works great, it functions awesome, and the fact that it is free and in active development and yet to reach version 1.0, did i say it's nothing but a miracle of an app? the only downside is that it made me think, of how and what the object type i'd, and the relations it has, and the templates i'll be using, but for a new user, the ANY gallery is your best bet in using the app. and as an "experienced" user, if there are types that inherits from other types in a hierarchical structure this would be of a great help. but i am just nitpicking right now XD

Pros
+ fast performance (14)+ UI/UX quality (22)+ customizable data model (12)
Cons
learning curve (14) alpha/beta releases (14)

Such a great software for the local knowledge base, task management, note storage, etc. It's kind of constructor of your data. So I'm still waiting for the self-hosted sync, web-clipper and sharing system for multiple users. But anyways, this is a rock app already. Thanks Any-team for that!
